Parents everywhere are gearing up for summer as the days grow longer and the sun shines brighter. But this year, something feels different. Children and teens are showing signs of anxiety, moodiness, and stress. As a parenting professional, I’ve witnessed these trends firsthand in our clinic. But fear not! There are strategies you can employ to support your child’s well-being during these challenging times.

The Neuroaffirming Approach

1. Play Matters

Play is more than just fun—it’s essential for healthy brain development. Children engaging in play learn problem-solving skills, build social connections, and regulate their emotions. As a parent, encourage unstructured playtime. Let your child explore, create, and imagine. Whether it’s building forts, playing dress-up, or pretending to be superheroes, play fosters resilience and creativity.

2. Unconditional Positive Regard

Imagine a world where your child feels accepted and loved, no matter what. That’s the power of unconditional positive regard. As a parenting professional, I encourage you to practice active listening and empathy. When your child shares their feelings, validate them. Show them that their emotions are valid, even if you don’t fully understand. By doing so, you create a safe space for emotional expression.

3. Respecting Their Humanity

Every child is unique, and their experiences shape their worldview. Take the time to understand your child’s interests, fears, and dreams. Ask open-ended questions and truly listen to their responses. Celebrate their individuality and honor their cultural background. Whether it’s through food, stories, or traditions, embrace the richness of their heritage.

Supporting Anxious, Moody, and Stressed Children

1. Mindfulness Practices

Teach your child mindfulness techniques to manage stress. Deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, and guided imagery can help calm their nervous system. Practice these together, especially during challenging moments.

2. Create a Routine

Predictability brings comfort. Establish a daily routine that includes time for play, rest, and connection. Consistent bedtimes, meal schedules, and family rituals provide stability and reduce anxiety.

3. Limit Screen Time

While screens are a part of modern life, excessive screen time can exacerbate moodiness and stress. Encourage outdoor play, creative activities, and face-to-face interactions. Set boundaries around screen use to promote balance.
